In light of the day that’s in it, I’d like to recommend two books which are about World War 1.

I first read Testament of Youth when I was a teenager and it blew my mind. An amazing and starkly beautiful account of the First World War from a very English perspective. It’s a classic for all times I think, not just for what it says about World War 1.

 

 

The other book I want to mention is one from a distinctly more Irish perspective and that’s Sebastian Barry’s A Long Long Way. I read this for the first time a few years ago and it moved me to tears…

With the grim weather outside today, it’s perfect for curling up with a new book and indulging in a bit of redemptive history…
